There are three ways of trying to win the young. You can preach at them- that is a hook without a worm. You can say, “You must volunteer”- that is of the devil. And you can tell them, “You are needed”- that appeal hardly ever fails”. — Kurt Hahn, Educator

Teachers in Uganda are striking for a salary increase which will provide them with a living wage.

Teachers in Uganda earn as little as $96 a month under conditions where inflation is running at 20 %. The teachers – who are members of the union Ugandan National Teachers Association (UNATU) are demanding a 100% rise. Teachers are among the worst paid government employees in the country – yet Yoweri Museveni – President of Uganda since 1986 – says that an increase for teachers is not a priority. Instead the government is prioritising infrastructure which will allow it to become one of the world’s top 50 oil producers.

[UK] Today, the Department for Education will unveil plans for a national reading competition for children in the last three years of primary education and the first year of secondary school.

The contest – launched in the autumn – will be designed to boost literacy standards and encourage a generation of “reluctant readers” to pick up books.

But ministers said that the move would be particularly appealing to boys who often thrive on a “bit of healthy competition”.

The announcement comes just days after Claire Tomalin, acclaimed biographer of Charles Dickens, warned that modern youngsters did not have the attention span necessary to read one of his novels.

Walking by Laurie Frick

Collage patterns captured from daily walks.  What if sensors, cameras and GPS collected daily movement and cumulatively displayed your walking patterns.  Would it be motivating to move around and walk more everyday?  I’m using a fitbit, mytracks and a catcam to hand collect and hand-build these collage works.  But also thinking about the software algorithm that could capture and display something very similar.
